Propaganda
The term 'propaganda'
is something we commonly know to be used when
fighting wars. Although frequently used to mislead
people, it's only redeeming virtue is when it it is
used to keep up morale. In all other situations, it
is no more than a prostitution of the soul.
The Merriam-Webster
definition of the term gives a clear description of
the term:
"the spreading of
ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of
helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a
person", and;
"ideas, facts, or
allegations spread deliberately to further one's
cause or to damage an opposing cause; also : a
public action having such an effect".
Often, it is used by
those attempting to vigorously defend what would
normally be considered to be an indefensible
situation (ie. water fluoridation). In other words,
if you cannot rely upon the truth to win your 'war',
then restrict or bend the truth to suit your own
argument and discredit the opposition.
The reader is left in
no doubt that term is more of a 'weapon' than a
tool. It's definition also clearly demonstrates that
it is something to be used by an aggressor. Hence,
the use of pro-fluoridation propaganda by the
establishment has to be seen as something totally
undesirable.
In the media, there is
an old saying. "Never let the truth get in the way
of a good story". In the campaign to promote
fluoridation, it could be redefined as: "Never let
the truth get in the way of an bad objective".
